A student recently wrote us: "How do you know that 3.5% of ocean water is salt?? This needs to be explained in the explanation."

The fact that the ocean is approximately 3.5% salt is not a fact that the AAMC expects a student to recall. In the first paragraph of the passage a parenthetical states that ocean water is 3.5% NaCl. If one recognizes that it is unlikely that the AAMC would expect you to recall a particular fact or number, take a closer look at the passage and/or question stem.
