A student recently wrote us: "The passage says that "* indicates a statistically significant difference between baseline and post-treatment HDRS values", it does not say whether it was an increase or a decrease, therefore I chose the answer "no conclusions can be drawn". However, the answer key reads that the table indicates an increase. The passage information given do not indicate increase, it only mentions a difference. This is inconsistent and misleading."

The direction of the statistically significant difference can be inferred as an increase because we are told that the data in are acquired before and after treatment. Furthermore, it's an increase because there is an increase from pre- to post-treatment.

Thanks for your question. I hope this helps!
