Chemistry/Organic Chemistry Chapter 3 Passage

Post by jonade » Thu Feb 07, 2019 4:18 pm

I have a question about Chapter 3 in the NextStep Chemistry and Organic Chemistry content book.

I did the passage practice at the end of chapter 3, and came across question 6. It reads, "Which of the following solutions is most likely to require a brown bottle for proper use in the experiment?"

According to the passage in the 2nd paragraph, it says that light-solution reactions are common to the transition metals in period 5 and below. The answer selection is:

A. Mn
B. Cd
C. Si
D. Os

I picked Cd since it is in period 5 and a transition metal, but the answer is Os, with the explanation that it is in period 6.

Can anyone elaborate?

Because the question asks for "most likely" we should choose the option that most obviously meets the criteria. Since we are looking for an element in period 5 or below it follows that the lower you go on the periodic table, the more likely you are to need a brown colored bottle. Thus, we should choose the element in the lowest period.

I hope this helps!
