Preparing for PCAT Essay Topics

A student recently asked us for advice on writing the PCAT Essay on topics one is less familiar with.

This is a great question, and the answer is that PCAT test-takers are not expected to be well-versed in the topics selected for the Writing essay, as content knowledge and outside information is not tested on this section. In fact, the test makers want to test your ability to problem-solve and think critically on the fly, and so thinking outside the box make provide an advantage! The PCAT essay topic will be on a health, sociopolitical, or cultural issue, so reading on these topics may offer some benefit, but it's more important to practice writing effectively in response to a variety prompts and be able to demonstrate your ability to problem-solve.
