A student recently asked us about the solution to the following question: "A certain theater has an equal number of blue and yellow lights. One of the star performers provides the lighting crew with lighting specifications for a performance. For the opening act, the performer wants 40% of the blue lights active and 60% of the yellow lights active. For the second act, the performer requests 40% more blue light and 40% less yellow light than the opening act. Which of the following represents the ratio of blue light to yellow light for the second act of the performance?"

To calculate the percentage of blue light after increasing 40% blue light by 40%, we must multiply 40% by 140%, as 140% represents 40% more blue light than the amount that currently exists. Multiplying by 40% would yield an amount 60% less than the amount of light that currently exists. Therefore, when a value increases by X%, be sure to add that percentage value to 100% (or add that fraction to 1) to account for an increase in what's currently present.
