Biochem Ch.5 EOC Indep. Q #1

Post by FlowersForElliot » Thu Mar 19, 2020 11:04 am

I am stuck between C and D. I need a little clarification as to why a high [ Glu ] would yield lower pI, rather than a low [Asp].

Thanks.

Low aspartic acid percentage (below average) would yield a higher pI than high glutamic acid, simply because each acidic residue lowers the pI further. It doesn't matter whether this is Asp or Glu, both will significantly lower the pI. Answer choice C says this particular peptide has a lot of acidic residues, and answer choice D says that another peptide has just a few acidic residues. The one with the higher amount of acidic residues will have the lower pI.
